WELCOME TO SATURDAY SOLVING!
Look for new puzzles here every two weeks. Each will include the answer to the previous position and a new one to ponder.
Hope you enjoyed the previous Saturday Solving in which we looked at a position from one of Smyslov’s games. If you did not catch the last article you can give the position a look here before seeing the answer. Without further ado I present the solution to the last position we examined:
A brilliant idea, would you not agree? I chanced upon this position as I was flipping through the book The Soviet Championships by Taimanov (a frequent participant himself) and Cafferty, and figured most readers would find it exceedingly interesting.
With that out of the way, let’s move on to the next position under examination, which happens to be from another Soviet Championship:
White is to move. Looking at the position it is immediately clear that he has the advantage. The black king position has been crippled and white’s bishop is the more effective of the two by far. Along with this the passed pawn on d6 is a big factor.
Having taken all of this into account, it still seems that a knockout blow is not imminent. How can you combine all of white’s advantages and finish the second player off? I found the solution very surprising and beautiful. Accurate and deep calculation will be required from the reader to solve this position.
As always, good luck and thanks for reading!
