Saturday Solving:
Develop!

WELCOME TO SATURDAY SOLVING!
Look for new puzzles here every two weeks. Each will include the answer to the previous position and a new one to ponder.

SEE LAST WEEK’S POSITION

In this week’s Saturday Solving we will attempt to solve a very nice (and unexpected!) mating combination. But first, let’s see the solution to the last position up for examination:

A nice solution to black’s impending problems, but a simple one. It is very surprising that Kramnik missed this, but the game was complicated, and both players were likely faced with impending time pressure. From that point of view a draw is not an unreasonable result.

Moving on! In the next position, out of a sharp Sicilian black was too slow to develop and paid the price. See if you can find the tactical shot:

Notice that black is one move away from castling into relative safety. Taking this into account, how can you prevent him from doing so and immediately decide the game in white’s favor?

Good luck, and feel free to submit your solution in the comments below.
