WELCOME TO SATURDAY SOLVING!
Look for new puzzles here every two weeks. Each will include the answer to the previous position and a new one to ponder.
In the modern era, it is often assumed that, thanks to the prevalence of computers in chess, the very best players in the world are somehow incapable of making a major oversight. This is obviously incorrect, and in last week’s position, we saw a great example of two stars of chess on one of their more human days. If you’d like to take a shot at solving the position, see last week’s article.
Without further ado, let’s see what they overlooked!
It is impossible to overestimate the importance of deep calculation in chess. Always look that one move further! In this week’s position we see that it is also important to avoid leaving your pieces hanging, even for just a move, without being 100% certain about it. Seasoned Grandmaster Zviad Izoria learned this lesson the hard way. (White to move)
Happy solving, and thanks as always for reading.
