WELCOME TO SATURDAY SOLVING!
Look for new puzzles here every two weeks. Each will include the answer to the previous position and a new one to ponder.
Here is the solution to the most recent Saturday Solving position up for examination. White’s back rank problems seem to be compensated for by his active pieces, but a young Alekhine spots the problem!
And now, I present the next position up for examination. In yet another Soviet Championship, the players reached this endgame position:
Taimanov writes “The following endgame of mine was recognized by an award.” Indeed, it was very worthy of such designation. The position is simplified, but white is definitely pressing with his pair of bishops. But with so few pawns left on the board it is unclear whether or not this will be enough to win.
Taimanov found a very nice continuation here. He combined mating threats and attempts to queen his advanced pawn to win the game. A little test: why is the move 66. Kb5 (going for the b6 pawn) not so good?
Best of luck! Feel free to submit your solution in the comments below, and I’ll reveal the answer in two weeks time.
