WELCOME TO SATURDAY SOLVING!
Look for new puzzles here every two weeks. Each will include the answer to the previous position and a new one to ponder.
As we left it last week, GM Zviad Izoria had placed his queen on a seemingly innocuous square that, in reality, walked straight into a tactical landmine! If you haven’t seen the position or would like to give it another try, you can find last week’s Saturday Solving at this link.
And now, let’s see how everything went so badly wrong in one small move.
An instructive example of how alert one must be to play chess well. Our next example comes from a matchup between two very interesting players, which is to this day their only encounter over the board. GM Ipatov has clearly won the opening battle at this point, and it was up to white to find the only clear equalizing shot. In the game he failed, allowing black to create a mighty passed pawn on c4, which, in most cases, should be in black’s favor. It is up to you to figure out how white could have improved! (White to move.)
Happy solving, and thanks as always for reading.
