Saturday Solving:
A Gem From Smyslov

WELCOME TO SATURDAY SOLVING!
Look for new puzzles here every two weeks. Each will include the answer to the previous position and a new one to ponder.

I have for you this Saturday another position to solve that I happened to stumble upon. As you may remember two weeks ago I sent out a similar challenge (you can find that first position here). Please let me know if you’d like the difficulty level of the problems to change. I’d appreciate any feedback you’d care to give in the comments below, and thanks in advance.

And now on to this week’s Solving:

While white is indeed up a pawn in the endgame, matters are not as simple as they may seem. Give black time to play … Re5 and the e4 pawn could come under fire. It was at this point that the 67 year old former World Champion Vassily Smyslov unleashed an incredible combination culminating in a decisive zugzwang.

As usual let me know what you come up with in the comments, and (obviously) try to resist the urge to seek help from the computer or a database. It would be to your detriment to take the easy path and not delve into this position in depth.

Thanks for reading!
